ASICS Manchester Marathon 2017

The Greater Manchester Marathon is renowned for its superfast route with 86% of the top 50 getting a PB or SB. The race which took place on 2nd April 2017 also saw 50% of the top 250 runners achieving a PB or SB. Let just hope there isn't a repeat of previous events which were measured using a wrongly calibrated bike!

Official Sports Massage

The Greater Manchester Marathon starts & finishes at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, where runners can collect their bags, medals & t-shirts, Erdinger recovery drink, and a sports massage. Sports Physio UK were again honoured to be involved in the organisation and running of the official sports massage service at the event. In conjunction with Athlete Matters (Worsley Physio Clinic), the team had a comprehensive set up of 20 massage beds, and 40 physio students from University of Salford and Manchester Metropolitan University.

"These events are a fantastic opportunity for physio students to gain invaluable hands-on experience in a high intensity sports environment. This really helps nurture their clinical experience and confidence, and gives them that competitive edge above their peers when applying for jobs."

Charity Donations

Runners made charitable donations for their much needed sports massages, with over £1,500 being raised for local charity Jump Space.Jump Space is a unique Rebound Therapy Trampolining and Sensory Play centre providing activity sessions for children young people and adults with any disability.

Local Runners

Despite being a national event, the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon is run by a large number of our local runners. On the run up to the marathon, we had over a dozen runners in clinic for treatment for acute injuries they had sustained during the latter stages of their training.

"Amateur runners are different to professional runners - for many it is their first marathon, for others they have raised money for charity. They are going to run whether they are injured or not. Our role is to help them reach that finish line."

Our team did an amazing job working to very tight rehab schedules to give some runners the prospect of being able to run, never mind finish the marathon. Despite a range of injuries, every one of the runners we were treating managed to complete the full 26 miles without any major issues.

Upcoming Events

The next events in our busy 2017 schedule are the Oldham Milltown to Moors Series, starting with the Saddleworth Sprint Triathlon on 23rd April 2017.The Sports Physio UK team will be Out on Location supporting the athletes at these local events. We work closely with members of Oldham & Royton Harriers, Royton Road Runners and Rochdale Triathlon clubs - it is always enjoyable to see their ongoing success at these events. We don't get paid anything from the organisers for providing this service, but we feel it is important as a community based business to support these type of events.
